The Keldan Story
Keldan International was founded in 1999 and has grown from very humble beginnings into one of Australia’s most successful suppliers  of innovative novel gift ideas. We saw very early on that there was a huge gap in the Fun and Novel gift sector of the market with many importers/wholesalers focussed on supplying mass market products - often of dubious quality standards. While these products have their appeal, the very essence of open mass market lines is to produce as much as possible as quickly as possible which usually meant the market is quickly flooded with the same or very similar looking products. We knew this made it much harder for retailers to differentiate themselves from their competition and often meant the products had a relatively short shelf life. After consulting extensively with retailers and consumers we discovered the market needed and deserved more innovative products that are designed specifically for Australian niche markets. So in 2001 we began dabbling in creating our own product concepts. We soon realised the process can be very resource intensive and time consuming (which is why most importers/wholesalers don’t do it) and we had our fair share of hiccups in those first few years. To create our own products we had to pay for all the tooling (which can be very expensive) and our manufacturers also required a much larger commitment than if we were just ranging  “Off the Shelf” products. So the capital investment was very high, and in our early days we usually didn’t have the additional resources to also invest in other less risky product options. This meant that if a product didn’t sell well, we didn’t have much else to fall back on and that can really hurt! So you could say we chose a hard road to hoe, but all the hard work and sacrifice has definitely been worth it, particularly in the last few years when we have achieved some pretty amazing sales results. Even in the tough early days we found that the market responded very positively to gift concepts that were fresh and innovative and we quickly established a very loyal customer base who continued to support us throughout our early trials and tribulations.  Our belief that today’s retailers need to be far more savvy than in bygone eras and would therefore embrace suppliers focussed on product innovation has proved 100% correct.  And we also feel great pride that our products are contributing to the growth and success of the businesses of our ever increasing band of loyal customers.  The biggest testament to our decision to focus on product innovation has been our continued growth during the global economic crisis. During this period we not only met our projected targets but continued to break sales records month after month. It showed us that even (or maybe especially) in tough times consumers will still seek out products that are unique and stand out from the crowd. And consumers will always embrace products that make them smile and feel good. As successful as the last few years have been we know the best is still to come! We have now formed exclusive partnerships with some of the most innovative and well respected manufacturers in Asia and we will continue investing in the development of novel gift concepts that will keep us at the cutting edge of the market. And we look forward to continue working with our very special customer base who share our vision of offering consumers unique gift concepts that are bright, colourful and lots of fun!
